JUST TO BE THE MAN WHO WALKED A THOUSAND MILES TO FALL DOWN
AT YOUR DOOR
"You're crazy. Absolutely crazy."
So Darren was told as he stood in a ring of students, looking down his nose at one of the newer members of the school. His posture was playful, and his gaze held the same mischievous glamour as his smile did. Excitement tingled through his body, and he bounced on the balls of his feet as he kept his arms crossed over his chest, his voice jovial. "No, I mean it."
Earlier that day, he'd been informed that this new student was a speedster, but super shy, despite the fact that he wanted a way into the group of athletes. He could show off, but just didn't know how. And the young electrokinetic had come up with a brilliant idea--- He dares the kid, boots his self esteem, everyone gets a good laugh, a total win-win. Though, of course, the speedster wasn't exactly seeing the ends to the means.
"Run it by me again, 'cause I'm pretty sure I didn't hear it right." the fourteen-year-old speedster gulped, making Darren bounce again with a laugh. "Last one to twenty push ups has to wear this hula costume. Plain and simple, right?"
"You . . . You know what I can do, don't you?" To this, the young electrokinetic nodded. He knew very well indeed. He was setting himself up for failure, and he was fully aware of this. But to say he minded at all would have been a lie, too. If it got this kid to smile and feel comfortable with the gathered crowd . . . If it got him to feel accepted . . . He was positive it was worth it. "You wanna take my bet, or not?"
Of course, the kid nodded, afraid there was no "no" for an answer, though he stared at Darren as though he truly believed the exclamation he had first made. He absolutely had to be completely nuts. Both teens got into their starting positions, and Darren locked eyes with the other, giving him a smile. A ghost of one appeared on the other's face, though it was still obvious he was unsure . . .
"Ready? Set . . . Go!"
And they both were off! But before Darren could even so much as get to three, the other was on his feet again and out of breath.
" . . . Well . . . you lost . . . are you really going to wear that thing?"
"Yep."
It wasn't long before the crowd around the group of boys had grown larger. Exclamations spread throughout the group, from all sides. "Palmer's in a hula skirt!" "Oh, my God!" "This is gold!" "PALMER'S IN A DRESS!"
Not that Darren cared. He'd lost the bet, fair and square. And the kid . . . he was grinning from ear to ear. And even he had to admit . . . he looked absolutely fabulous.
